I graduated as an art therapist at St Albans College of Art (now the University of Hertfordshire) in 1985. Art therapy training is at a Post-graduate level, based on psychotherapy theory and practice. My training included formal examinations in psychotherapy, psychology and psychiatry. This training equips the art therapist to work in the field of psychotherapy and counselling, with groups and individuals in the health services, in education and in private practice.
For further information on training, contact the British Association of Art Therapists www.baat.org/ and the Irish Association of Creative Arts Therapists, I.A.C.A.T. www.iacat.ie
I qualified as a counselling supervisor in 1999 with the Personal Counselling Institute, Dublin. Psychotherapists and counsellors are required to attend regular supervision as an integral part of their practice. This helps to maintain standards of care for clients and aids the professional development of the therapist.
WORK PRACTICE Much of my work has been, and still is, with groups attending Psychiatric services in hospitals and day centres. In my private practice I work on a one to one basis with adults experiencing a wide range of problems, such as bereavement, sexual abuse, low self- esteem, relationship difficulties, and depression. I also see student therapists who are required to attend therapy as part of their training, and I supervise therapists from different disciplines. I frequently give workshops and lectures on art therapy and counselling supervision.
